Gershon Ben Keren
Gershon Ben Keren is a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Krav Maga, who has been training in the martial arts and self-defense since 1979, and specifically in Krav Maga since 1992. Originally a Judoka (a practitioner of Judo), Gershon, won regional and national titles in this sport, and regularly trained with the UK National Squad in the early 1990’s. Due to a back injury, he was forced to retire from competition, and began to focus primarily on reality based self-defense and personal protection, travelling to Israel, and studying with a variety of different Krav Maga instructors, representing different styles and approaches – something that he has continued to do since. In 2010, he was inducted into the Museum of Israeli Martial Arts in Herzliya, Israel.
In 2012, he founded Krav Maga Yashir (meaning “Direct Contact Combat” in Hebrew), a system of Krav Maga, that stayed true to the concepts and principles of Imi Lichtenfeld – the founder of Krav Maga – but also reflected the time he had spent studying Dennis Hisardut; the “Survival” system created by Dr Dennis Hanover, one of Israel’s and the IDF’s most acclaimed military hand-to-hand combat trainers. In 2014, he was contacted by Tuttle Publishing, who asked him to write a book, explaining and describing the Krav Maga Yashir system, and its techniques. The result was the critically acclaimed, “Krav Maga – Real World Solutions to Real World Violence” ( click here to view on Amazon).
Gershon Ben Keren, currently runs and operates Krav Maga Yashir Boston, a 16 000 sq ft training facility (the largest Krav Maga training facility on the US East Coast), where he trains, civilians, law enforcement and security agencies, as well as members of the U.S. military. He has appeared on numerous TV shows, and been featured in magazine and news articles, concerning self-defense and personal safety (some of these can be found on the right hand sidebar of this page).
Gershon, is co-founder, of the SEPS (Situation Effective Protection System), a framework for understanding, predicting and preventing violence. This system has been used by many companies and enterprises, both in the US and Europe, to train their members how to predict, prevent and avoid violence, whether it is in dealing with violence in the workplace (including active shooter scenarios), or in more general scenarios, such as muggings and sexual assaults etc. If you are interested in looking at the different corporate training offerings he provides or are interested in his consultancy services, please click here.
As a real world operator and trainer in the security industry, and with an MA and a research background in Psychology, Gershon Ben Keren, brings both real world experience, coupled with an academic perspective to all aspects of his training, both physical and non-physical.
About Krav Maga Yashir
Krav Maga, meaning “Contact Combat” in Hebrew, is the hand-to-hand fighting system, used by the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces). Originally created and developed by Imi Lichtenfeld, in the 1940’s, it was designed with one goal in mind: to get an untrained, inexperienced soldier combat ready in the shortest possible time – a goal which the method still stays true to, today. Using instinctive and instinctual movements in response to threats and attacks, Krav Maga, works with the natural ways that you will respond when assaulted e.g. if your throat is attacked, you will automatically bring your hands up to clear the attack etc. This approach means that initial responses to attacks, which are the most important, do not have to be trained, and will automatically be performed under the stress and duress of a real-life assault.
Imi Lichtenfeld, laid down the concepts and principles, of Krav Maga, however he didn’t create a “complete” and “comprehensive” set of techniques e.g. in his original system, there was little to no groundwork, and variations upon attacks were not covered etc. The system was also primarily designed for members of the infantry, who would have a pack on their back, restricting certain types of movement. As the IDF expanded its operations, and created specialist units, so different and “new” Krav Maga techniques were required, and different styles of Krav Maga started to develop and evolve. In the current landscape, Krav Maga, cannot be defined by techniques, but by an adherence to the principles that Imi, first developed.
Although Krav Maga is a military system of fighting, much of what colored Imi’s creation and development of it, came from his civilian experiences, living in Europe during the 1930’s, when he and fellow Jews were attacked by Fascist, anti-Semitic, street gangs. He understood that violence happened fast, that it often involved multiple attackers, and there simply wasn’t the time to do anything that was either complex or difficult to perform. Responses, had to be fast, focused and be able to be performed quickly under stress and duress. This is still a benchmark, which Krav Maga techniques are measured by i.e. can a technique be performed under high stress, when fatigued etc.
Krav Maga Yashir (Yashir, meaning “direct” in Hebrew), is a reality based system of self-defense, that has been developed by Gershon Ben Keren. It reflects the teaching of different Krav Maga instructors and Israeli Military Instructors he has trained with. The system stays true to the principles laid down by Imi Lichtenfeld, and mirrors many of the adaptations that other Krav Maga systems as taught and practiced in Israel, have made and developed. Gershon continues to train in Israel, and bring Israeli instructors to his school in Boston, to make sure that the system reflects the developments that are being made in Israel.
