Gershon Ben Keren has been providing security and personal safety training (self-protection training) to a variety of companies and organizations since 1990. A criminologist with two masters degrees – Psychology and Criminology and Criminal Psychology – Gershon combines real world experience with the latest evidentially based research into crime and violent offending. Whilst acts of violence may appear “random” and seem to come out of nowhere, offenders and those they victimize, must meet in time and space, and sometimes crime prevention can be as simple as understanding why this correlation occurs, and how to prevent it from doing so. Crime and violent offending tend to follow a common five-step process and by learning to identify the stages along this timeline it becomes possible to both predict and avoid being victimized. Most of this knowledge and training can be delivered through presentations and doesn’t require hands-on/physical training.
Whilst we can and do offer physical self-defense training it is usually more productive to learn the skills that allow us to predict, prevent, and avoid violence first, rather than to immediately learn how to physically defend ourselves. By learning physical solutions first – which is a much harder proposition – there is a danger that violence gets presented as something that is inevitable and can’t be avoided, which is generally not the case. It is also the case that without understanding how violent incidents develop, it is difficult to get physical techniques and solutions to work, due to the fact that the individual will be caught by surprise and forced to react, finding themselves playing a game of catch up. By first educating people as to what potentially violent incidents look like, even if some can’t be dealt with using non-physical tactics and strategies, individuals are better prepared to get their physical solutions to work. Most of these presentations can be taught virtually, as well as on-site.
When we do teach hands-on, practical, physical seminars and classes we do so by directing attendees that the only reason they are physically engaging with an aggressor is in order to create a disengagement opportunity, allowing them to get away safely. The solutions provided to do so are simple, effective, easily learnt, and are able to be recalled under the stress and duress of a real-life confrontation. Our programs are not aimed at teaching people how to fight but how to physically defend themselves so that they are able to get to safety.
